48. Mykonos

At least today the sun had come out, but it was still pretty chilly and windy. Around noon I hopped on my four-wheeler and headed back back to Super Paradise. It was partly cloudy; when the sun was out it was reasonably pleasant to be on the beach. A little like San Francisco on a cool summer day — not with fog, but some chilly marine air. There were perhaps ten people on the beach in the afternoon. For some reason, the water felt much colder than it had the day before, so no swimming today. Perhaps a cold winter current had suddenly cooled things off overnight.

A group of friendly locals invited me to a café on the harbor in town, so I met them there. It was a pleasant enough place to sit, but they were speaking Greek most of the time, so I didn't exactly feel welcomed into the conversation. I had parked over by a line of several lovely windmills, and I spent some time walking through the maze of the town and browsing at the many small shops, still open for business. A large cruise ship did come to town for the afternoon, which I suppose was enough to sustain them. The character of the place changes dramatically when this crowd is around, and I was a little relieved when they left for the evening. In the square near the harbor are three gigantic white pelicans — quite a sight. Apparently they always hang out in this one spot. At Portas tonight I talked briefly with a nice local guy who will travel to San Francisco in January — so I'm looking forward to showing him around.
